Presentation Feedback/Learner Response

Learner response:

  • Brilliant choice of music- so cinematic and fits the task perfectly.
  • Parallel is perfect- captures the horror genre impressively.
  • Contrapuntal largely works well although top left image perhaps not so much... has a slightly odd feel?

WWW:

The sound clip worked well with the parallel collage because the clip was from a horror movie therefore it complimented the pictures in the collage well and gave the spooky, spine-chilling feeling I was hoping for.

EBI:

On the other hand even though my contrapuntal images worked well in not fitting with the sound clip a few images, e.g. the still image from pineapple express didn't work so well.

Lighting

Low-key lighting

Strong contrast between dark and light (chiaroscuro)- creates a dramatic effect.
The key light is mainly on the right side of the characters face. There is some back lighting. The atmosphere is like a film noir movie, the lighting helps us interpret that the still shot may be taken from a crime scene. The characters expression is very mysterious and the shadows help emphasis that.

Low-key lighting

Top lighting- this emphasises her beauty and makes her appear like a star and look more glamorous. From what we can see there is no other lighting. The background is almost black and the only visible thing in the still shot is the characters face and a bit of her hands.

High-key lighting

there aren't many shadows being created. However, there are shadows under the characters eyes, which suggests that top lighting is being used. The use of this top light creates an aggressive facial expression.

Low-key lighting

The use of low-key lighting helps create a dark mysterious atmosphere.  There is lighting coming from the back to show the rain. Furthermore there's some sort of light reflecting on the gun, which may be a filler light and there's also a light coming from the left side which helps light one side of his face.

Low-key lighting

There is an obvious shadow which means no filler lights have been used. However there is a key light shining onto the left side of the character.

High-key lighting

There is natural light coming through the blinds which creates shadows on the characters.

High-key lighting

The only lighting used in this image is a back light to create the silhouettes on the floor, this creates a dramatic and mysterious picture.

Low-key lighting

There is a clear contrast between light and dark. The key light is on the left side of her face. And there is hardly any filler light. This creates a dramatic and mysterious feel to the image.

High-key lighting

There are no shadows which is a great example of high-key lighting. The picture looks very natural and doesn't give the impression of thee being any lighting used. There also might be a top light used in this image as there is a shadow where his neck is.

Low-key lighting

There is key light coming from the left side of his face as this side is lit. This image is very dark, which creates a  creepy and intense atmosphere.

High-key lighting

There are shadows present in the image however they're not emphasised therefore they look natural.

Mise-en-scene

Hunger Games

The main protagonist Katniss Everdeen is the central focus of this still image which could mean she is the core reason for them being held hostage. Her serious facial expression suggests that she is in some sort of distress, the same applies for the other two characters behind her. The characters alongside the main character seem to be wearing the same clothing which could suggest a specific type of uniform. In addition to that, they're holding guns which could infer that they're officers or have some sort of authority over the other characters. The attire they're wearing looks very modern and not something we see 'police officers' or 'soldiers' wear which could suggest that the narrative of this story is set in the future. Furthermore the clothing the hostages are wearing are very dull and could signify that they're of a lower class.

Maze Runner

The main character in this film is Thomas ( Dylan O'Brien ) and the story is based upon a group of people trapped in a glade and they try to escape through a maze. The scene starts of with a group of guys waiting by a wall that leads into a mysterious maze. Their facial expression suggests that they're quite tense and agitated. In addition to that the way the characters are dressed could mean they are living in poor conditions this can also be supported by the fact they're covered in dirt and it seems as though they haven't showered in weeks. On the other hand the setting seems to give the feel of a 'adventure' genre movie due to the long steel walls and there only being one visible place of habitation. This could also help us interpret that they are trapped and are desperately trying to escape. Furthermore there is a build up of dramatic music which sets a feel of danger.

The Conjuring

This movie is about a family that move into a secluded farmhouse, where a supernatural presence has made itself known. The scene immediately gives a spine-chilling feeling because a young girl is continuously banging her head against a wardrobe. The lighting is dark and gives a terrifying feeling since we are unsure of what is about to happen. The older girl in the scene who gives the impression of being the little girls sister takes the little girl back into bed- up until this point there is no sign of panic from neither the characters nor us as audience. However suddenly spooky music starts playing in the background which makes everything intense and gives us the feeling that something awful is about to happen. The facial expression of the character suggests that she is petrified. The older sister opens the wardrobe door revealing there is no 'supernatural being' present there however her younger sister gets up and takes a loud gasp which infers she has seen something. At this point both characters look at the top of the wardrobe and there is a ghostly figure of a women who has a distorted face who jumps on the girl which suggests she is a horrific creature. The end of the scene results in both characters screaming but the camera is now on a man who seems to be there father due to his sudden panic when hearing the screams of the girl. who has just returned home.

If I Stay

As soon as the scene starts it is evident it is of a romance genre. This is due to there being a male and female character who are holding hands and looking into each others eyes. The actress has a nervous facial expression which could suggest she is feeling anxious. The male character seems to be gazing at the female character which could suggest he is admiring her beauty and could possibly be in love with her. Furthermore majority of the scene consists of the two characters holding hands however towards the end they share a kiss which could imply that they're romantically involved and this movie is about a love story. In addition to that, both characters seem young which could signify this is a story of 'young love'. On the other hand the attire both characters are wearing seems sophisticated and elegant which could infer they have just gotten back from their first date.

Film Poster Analysis

What do you think the film is about and what might the storyline be?
I think the story is about a group of friends who face a series of events which are horrific but are portrayed in a humorous way. The woman in the top left corner resembles 'The Exorcist' and from this we can assume that the film will be a parody of  various horror films.
What genre(s) do you think the film belongs to?
    Comdey/Horror
Who do you think is the target audience? 50% Males 50% Females aged between 16-35
What do you think the film is about and what might the storyline be?
I think the story is about a man who is isolated in some way. The dark atmosphere suggests this and it is evident that the man in the poster is the main protagonist since not any other character is revealed.
What genre(s) do you think the film belongs to?
        Drama
Who do you think is the target audience? 30% Males 70% Females aged between 18-45
What do you think the film is about and what might the storyline be?
I think the story is about a boy who stumbles upon a hole in the ground. The poster doesn't give away any other clues and that is what makes people want to watch the movie to know what is in that hole.
What genre(s) do you think the film belongs to?
            Thriller/Drama
Who do you think is the target audience? 50% Males 50% Females aged between 16-35
What do you think the film is about and what might the storyline be?
I think the story is about pirates who go on a quest to find some type of treasure which I can assume is 'The dead mans chest' due to the small title under the main title which could also suggest that this movie is some type or tetralogy.
What genre(s) do you think the film belongs to?
                Drama/Action
Who do you think is the target audience? 60% Males 40% Females aged between 16-45
What do you think the film is about and what might the storyline be?
I think the story is about an american boy who falls in love with an indian girl. This judgement is based upon the central image of the couple who seem to be the main focus of the film and i can also assume that they are both of different cultural backgrounds due to the images of the Taj Mahal and Skyine of America on either side of the characters. The word 'prejudice' suggests that the female characters family might be against the marriage due to the norms and values of their culture.
What genre(s) do you think the film belongs to?
                    Romance/Comdey/Drama
Who do you think is the target audience? 30% Males 70% Females aged between 18-45
What do you think the film is about and what might the storyline be?
I think the story is mainly based around the female character since she is the central focus of the poster. The desaturation of colour and darkness suggests the movie is quite serious.
What genre(s) do you think the film belongs to?
                        Thriller/Action
Who do you think is the target audience? 40% Males 60% Females aged between 16-35

What do you think the film is about and what might the storyline be?
I think the story is about the creation of a scientific type of machine which i can infer due to the images at the bottom of the poster. Also the character Harrison Ford is playing must stop the destruction of earth and is the main protagonist and his weakness or opponent may be the female character.

What genre(s) do you think the film belongs to?
                              Science fiction

Who do you think is the target audience? 60% Males 40% Females aged between 16-45 What do you think the film is about and what might the storyline be?
I think the story is about a city which consists of many 'sins' which I've inferred due to the title however the poster also suggests that the female characters play strong characters since one of them is holding a gun. In addition to that the word 'sin' could also mean that the female characters may be prostitutes.
What genre(s) do you think the film belongs to?
                                  Thriller/Action
Who do you think is the target audience? 60% Males 40% Females aged between 16-45
